Writing a weekly newsletter is sometimes a practice in discipline and resilience. Some weeks, inspiration flows effortlessly. Other weeks, it’s a grind to find the right words. Today was one of those grind-it-out days. But I’ve learned that breakthroughs often come through persistence. and consistency can often be the quiet power behind success.

Without the spark of my own words, I revisited the wisdom I’ve collected over the years. One name stood out: Pat Williams, named one of the 50 most influential people in basketball, co-founder of the Orlando Magic, and a prolific author of over 100 books. Pat was not only an exceptional leader but also a husband, father, mentor, and friend to many. Although he is no longer with us, his leadership lessons continue to inspire.

One of Pat’s most impactful teachings is his answer to a profound question: What does a great leader look like? His response outlines the seven foundational blocks of leadership excellence.

Let’s explore them:

The Seven Foundations of Leadership Excellence

  1. A Compelling Vision Vision anchors a leader. It energizes, focuses, and fuels passion, keeping you resilient through challenges. A clear vision propels you to finish strong.
  2. Communication A leader must communicate the vision with clarity, optimism, and inspiration. Stories bring messages to life, fostering understanding, hope, and motivation. As Pat said, “A leader is a dealer in hope.”
  3. People Skills Great leaders genuinely care about and love people. They make that love visible and intentional. Relationships built on respect and kindness are the foundation of trust and collaboration.
  4. Character Leadership without character crumbles. Honesty, humility, and accountability are non-negotiable. Leaders don’t shift blame or seek the spotlight—they serve with integrity.
  5. Competence Leaders solve problems, develop talent, and remain lifelong learners. They read, ask questions, and seek wisdom. Growth is a never-ending journey, and competence fuels the engine.
  6. Boldness Leadership demands courage. When there’s a void, great leaders step in decisively. They make tough calls and take ownership of their role.
  7. A Servant’s Heart Leadership isn’t about you; it’s about others. Servant leaders prioritize their team’s success over their own and lead with humility and generosity.

Reflecting on the Bigger Picture

Pat Williams influenced my leadership journey profoundly. The notes I took during his talk nearly a decade ago have become a touchstone for my growth. His words remind me of the power each of us holds to influence others. Leadership isn’t confined to titles or positions—it’s in how we choose to show up every day.

My Challenge to You

Take a moment to reflect: Where are you on your leadership journey? Which of these seven foundations are your strengths, and which could use more attention? Leadership is a choice we make daily, and it starts with self-awareness and intentional growth.
